Go to the Ufficio Anagrafe (the biggest location in Milan is on Via Larga in the city center). Tell the person at the information desk that you need to update the name on your carta d’identità and show your birth certificate. You’ll be given a number and told to go into the large room at the back.
When your number is called, go to the window and explain your situation. The civil servant will very politely explain that you need to leave a photocopy of your passport and birth certificate for their records. You leave the office and go to a newsstand nearby that makes copies. Pay the 5 cents per copy and return to the counter. Hand over the photocopies and you are told that it takes 4-6 weeks for the change to be processed. You are given a receipt and told to come back in a few weeks.
Return to the same Ufficio Anagrafe with your old carta d’identità, your receipt and 3 headshots. You are issued a new carta d’identità with your full name. Pay the €5.42 fee in cash (debit and credit card not accepted).
If you have an “unlimited” permesso di soggiorno at the time of step 2, the expiration date on the receipt you receive will be the year 2999.
