When completing your first fingerprinting badge, you will pay the $22 fee and the fingerprinting office will send your application to the state BCI. You will then wait a few weeks (about 1 or 2 weeks for Ohio records) before you receive your background check in the mail. Use a US mailing address and enlist the assistance of someone willing to help your cause (once again, thanks Mom!). This will cut back on mailing times and make everything a little faster, which is essential when you only have a six-month validity period.
Check to make sure your name is written correctly (remember that for your citizenship application, your name must be written exactly the same on all documents). If the office makes a mistake and does not print your middle name, give them a call (contact info on the Attorney General website). The office’s policy is to not reissue background checks unless they receive another fingerprint application, but the government official will be very polite and reasonable, and kindly reissue your document with the correct name.
After a few short days you’ll receive the background check in the mail at your trusted helper’s address. Congratulations! You have successfully completed the state criminal background check badge!
